As the focus of competitive road races has shifted towards recreational events there is still a need to support runners that maintain a competitive urge. Recent events have led a few in the Birmingham area to believe the time is right to form an organization to not only assist high performance competitors but to encourage all area runners and to educate the community of the positive impacts of competitive running.
The Cahaba Distance Project has been established as a vehicle for the development of competitive post-collegiate runners. The group is a USA Track and Field (USATF) registered club team. The core membership of the group are distance runners with hopes and aspirations at the local, regional and national level.
The Birmingham, Alabama area offers a great environment for a developmental group. With outdoor and indoor track facilities, fitness paths as well as soft surface trails athletes have endless routes to run. Local YMCAs, private gyms, & clubs for cross-training are abundant in the metropolitan area. Birmingham also offers superior medical support for the athlete with sports medicine clinics and physical therapy rehabilitation centers readily available when needed. Mild winters make year round training possible. Each athlete is expected to be a positive influence in the community while volunteering and assisting in support of the sport. They are expected to set individualized goals and actively train towards reaching those goals. In exchange for this commitment the team will provide professional support in many areas. Personalized coaching and structure is provided to all team members. Assistance is being provided for competition scheduling, travel arrangements, endorsement contracts and other necessities that are required by the runners training and competing at the highest levels. Medical and rehabilitation services can be arranged to treat training related injuries.
Funding of the non-profit organization comes from the generosity of private individuals and corporate partners.
