oosa Riverkeeper is a citizen-based river conservation group with a mission to protect, restore and promote the Coosa River and its tributaries in Alabama. We patrol the waters, educate the public, and advocate for the river. The organization was founded in 2010 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit in response to the Coosa River being listed by American Rivers as one of the ten most endangered rivers in the country due to the impacts of hydropower.

From humble beginnings in a small mini-storage warehouse office in Riverside on the banks of Logan Martin Lake, the organization has grown to two full-time staff, an excellent Board of Directors, an Advisory Councildozens of volunteers and interns and hundreds of members. The organization is nearly equal thirds funded by private foundations, membership from the general public and fundraising events. Our financial disclosures which detail our diverse fundraising sources and how we spend that money to improve the Coosa River can be found in our annual Form 990s.

Coosa Riverkeeper is a proud member of Waterkeeper Alliance, an international network of over 250 organizations working to protect their local waterways on 6 continents. Waterkeepers are found across the globe and within Alabama we are joined by seven other Waterkeepers: Black Warrior RiverkeeperCahaba RiverkeeperChoctawhatchee RiverkeeperHurricane CreekkeeperMobile BaykeeperLittle River Waterkeeper, and Tennessee Riverkeeper.

10% Tuesday for Pediatric Heart Transplant Study Foundation

10% Tuesday for Pediatric Heart Transplant Study Foundation.  10% of sales from 5PM until midnight will benefit this organization.

The PHTS Foundation was established in 2010 as a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization dedicated to raise and administer funds to advance the science and treatment of children while listed for and following heart transplantation. The PHTS Foundation supports the good works of the Pediatric Heart Transplant Study (PHTS).

The Pediatric Heart Transplant Study (PHTS) is dedicated to the advancement of the science and treatment of children during listing for and following heart transplantation. Although there are 500 transplants a year, any individual center may only do a few and even the largest centers rarely do more than 20. It is essential that each center's experience and information is collected together, analyzed and the lessons learned passed on to everyone to advance the knowledge and improve the treatment of children's transplants. The purposes of the PHTS are to establish and maintain an international database for heart transplantation, to use the database to encourage and stimulate basic and clinical research in the field of pediatric heart transplantation, and to promote new therapeutic strategies.

10% Tuesday for Cahaba Distance Project.  10% of sales from 5PM until midnight benefit this organization.

ABOUT

http://www.cahabadistance.com/

As the focus of competitive road races has shifted towards recreational events there is still a need to support runners that maintain a competitive urge. Recent events have led a few in the Birmingham area to believe the time is right to form an organization to not only assist high performance competitors but to encourage all area runners and to educate the community of the positive impacts of competitive running.

The Cahaba Distance Project has been established as a vehicle for the development of competitive post-collegiate runners. The group is a USA Track and Field (USATF) registered club team. The core membership of the group are distance runners with hopes and aspirations at the local, regional and national level.

The Birmingham, Alabama area offers a great environment for a developmental group. With outdoor and indoor track facilities, fitness paths as well as soft surface trails athletes have endless routes to run. Local YMCAs, private gyms, & clubs for cross-training are abundant in the metropolitan area. Birmingham also offers superior medical support for the athlete with sports medicine clinics and physical therapy rehabilitation centers readily available when needed. Mild winters make year round training possible. Each athlete is expected to be a positive influence in the community while volunteering and assisting in support of the sport. They are expected to set individualized goals and actively train towards reaching those goals. In exchange for this commitment the team will provide professional support in many areas. Personalized coaching and structure is provided to all team members. Assistance is being provided for competition scheduling, travel arrangements, endorsement contracts and other necessities that are required by the runners training and competing at the highest levels. Medical and rehabilitation services can be arranged to treat training related injuries.

Funding of the non-profit organization comes from the generosity of private individuals and corporate partners.

10% Tuesday for the Willie Perry Foundation

10% Tuesday for the Willie Perry Foundation.  10% of sales from 5PM until midnight will benefit this organization.

Willie James Perry was best known as the Birmingham Batman, a Good Samaritan who help stranded motorists and gave free rides to the citizens of the Magic City. He was also a devoted family man to his wife Dorothy, daughter Marquetta, and sister Grace.

Born December 14, 1940, Willie lived in the South Titusville area of Birmingham. As a teenager he worked at window distributor in Lakeview where he assembled cast-iron furniture as well as door and window units. He was later promoted there to Shop Manager.

Willie was known around his neighborhood for his humanitarian acts of kindness and lived by the motto “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

One day Willie heard about a group of men who stopped to help a woman whose car had broken down. However instead of helping her, the men raped her.

As a husband and a father, this event resonated so deeply with Willie that he decided to do his best to ensure that future situations like this would not happen again around Birmingham. He immediately proceeded to purchase a 1971 Thunderbird. Learn about the “Rescue Ship” here.

On January 24, 1985, Willie died accidentally of carbon monoxide poisoning while getting the “Rescue Ship” ready for the next mission. The spirit of Willie certainly lives on today through The Willie J. Perry Foundation and its missions, which is steered by his daughter Marquetta.

Remind everyone to “Make Every Day a Willie Perry Day.”

Willie Perry was featured on “That’s Incredible” in 1981! Watch the feature here:

Current Missions

As Willie did himself with “The Rescue Ship”, the Willie J. Perry Foundation not only wants to help people get literally back on the road, but also get back on “The Road of Life” with our current missions:

THE WHEELS OF CHANGE:

Willie certainly knew the importance of education and having a good job. This program receives donated automobiles, repairs them, and then presents them to single parents who do not have any transportation so that they can attend school and have a job themselves. Learn More & Refer an Applicant

OTHER MISSIONS:

THE COMMUNITY EDUCATION PROGRAM

This program conducts monthly workshops to support individuals in need to work towards a greater good. We understand the importance of educating individuals for the future and our goal is to help them obtain an education which will give them the knowledge and skills necessary to improve their lives and their communities.

THE CARING PEOPLE MAKING A DIFFERENCE

This program has many exciting avenues, including Community Meals, Single Parent’s Children Assistance, Medical Transportation for Young Mothers, and Senior Services.

MY BROTHER – SISTER KEEPER PROGRAM

This program helps individuals in establishing and maintaining healthy relationships and marriages, keeping two as one.

10% Tuesday for Grace Klein Community

10% Tuesday for Grace Klein Community.  10% of sales from 5PM until midnight will benefit their Kwathu Children's Home.

Mission. Vision. Purpose

Mission: Create authentic community

Grace Klein Community seeks to create authentic community (Koinonia) by uniting diverse individuals, businesses, ministries, and churches to work together by sharing what they have in order to meet physical and spiritual needs both locally and globally.

Vision: Show people that they are deeply valued and that we all have something to give

Every person wants to know they are loved and that they matter. Grace Klein Community strives to live out community as a verb, providing people a forum to share what they have so everyone has what they need. Different ways to share are as unique as all of the different people who are part of a healthy community… we can give and take time, resources, money, talents, encouragement, knowledge, work, listening, and on and on. Community means trusting that you belong to others as much as they belong to you, so that we care for one another as much as we care for ourselves. When we live in a way that demonstrates “my plenty meets your need so in turn, your plenty meets mine,” then we have the power of Christ’s love to change the world.

Purpose: Demonstrate the love of Christ

Grace Klein Community exists as an educational and charitable 501(c)3 non-profit providing relief to the poor, the distressed and the underprivileged, lessening community tensions, eliminating prejudice and discrimination and combating community deterioration and juvenile delinquency.

10% Tuesday for Bare Hands Jr Board (for the Day of the Dead event).  10% of sales from 5PM until midnight will benefit this great festival!

http://www.barehandsinc.org/new-index/#bare-hands

Bare Hands, Inc. is a community-supported, non-profit arts organization dedicated to cultivating creativity and innovation in metro Birmingham and the surrounding region by creating opportunities and favorable environments in which artists and audiences play an active role in the creative process and cultural dialogues.

This mission is addressed through our Día de los Muertos festival, an annual joyful remembrance of lost loved ones which began in 2003, inspired by Mexico’s sacred Day of the Dead tradition, the tradition of Decoration Day in the Southern United States, New Orleans Jazz Funeral Processions and Birmingham’s own history and community. Since 2010, we have furthered this mission through the Bare Hands Art Club, a partnership with the local artistic community and the YWCA of Central Alabama that encourages creative expression in children moving from homelessness to transitional housing.

Bare Hands, Inc. works with and for the community to create meaningful and memorable experiences – there are many ways to get involved and we hope you will join us!

10% Tuesday to benefit Heart Gallery Alabama

10% Tuesday to benefit Heart Gallery Alabama.  10% of sales from 5PM until midnight will benefit this organization.

Heart Gallery Alabama is a nonprofit organization dedicated to finding forever families for children in Alabama’s foster care system by raising awareness and educating the public.

Heart Gallery’s volunteers and staff collaborate with the Alabama Department of Human Resources to create a photographic portrait exhibit of children in foster care, which travels to public venues across the state. Our photographs serve as a compelling and authentic representation of children across Alabama who are searching for loving, permanent families. Heart Gallery Alabama interviews each available child, and these interviews can be found on the child’s web page.

Heart Gallery Alabama recruits professional photographers to capture each child’s individual spirit in a moving photographic, multi-media, and narrative journey – featured online and in public venues.

Heart Gallery Alabama responds to inquiring families with questions regarding foster care adoption.  We partner with local and statewide media resources to inform the public of the need for foster care adoption.

Since its founding in 2005 and with the support of its donors, child advocates, and volunteers, Heart Gallery Alabama has helped find permanent homes for more than 65% of the children photographed.

10% Tuesday for Alabama Rivers Alliance.  10% of sales from 5PM until midnight will benefit this organization.

Alabama Rivers Alliance is a statewide network of groups working to protect and restore all of Alabama’s water resources through building partnerships, empowering citizens, and advocating for sound water policy and its enforcement.

Alabama has more than 132,000 miles of streams and rivers with more types of plants and animals living in them than any other state in the nation.  However, we also have one of the highest extinction rates in North America, many of which are species that live in our rivers.  Alabama’s precious water resources currently face many threats.  From improper enforcement of environmental regulations to the lack of planning and policy to ensure sustainable water for the future, our community is tasked with protecting the waters of the state for the health of the people and the life therein, or else we risk losing natural treasures that we can never retrieve.

10% Tuesday for National Multiple Sclerosis Society

10% Tuesday for National  Multiple Sclerosis Society.  10% of sales from 5PM until midnight will benefit this organization.

http://www.nationalmssociety.org/What-is-MS/Definition-of-MS

Multiple sclerosis (MS) involves an immune-mediated process in which an abnormal response of the body’s immune system is directed against the central nervous system (CNS), which is made up of the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves. The exact antigen — or target that the immune cells are sensitized to attack — remains unknown, which is why MS is considered by many experts to be "immune-mediated" rather than "autoimmune."

  • Within the CNS, the immune system attacks myelin — the fatty substance that surrounds and insulates the nerve fibers — as well as the nerve fibers themselves.
  • The damaged myelin forms scar tissue (sclerosis), which gives the disease its name.
  • When any part of the myelin sheath or nerve fiber is damaged or destroyed, nerve impulses traveling to and from the brain and spinal cord are distorted or interrupted, producing a wide variety of symptoms.
  • The disease is thought to be triggered in a genetically susceptible individual by a combination of one or more environmental factors.
  • People with MS typically experience one of four disease courses, which can be mild, moderate or severe.

10% Tuesday for Growing Kings

10% Tuesday for Growing Kings.  10% of sales from 5PM until midnight will benefit this organization.

https://www.growingkings.org/history/history/

Growing Kings is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization that provides mentoring programs to at-risk males in Birmingham City Schools.  Our goal is to offer positive direction that will lead toward progressive thinking in all aspects of our students’ lives. We differentiate ourselves from other mentoring services by utilizing non-traditional methods to reach young men.

Our Mission

To encourage and facilitate the critical thinking and positive attitudes of underserved male youth through systemic and targeted enrichment, research, and advocacy. By strictly adhering to our statement of value, “Building Stronger Men Everyday,” we position ourselves to become the catalyst for necessary, positive change and stand as the eminent exemplar of communal support and development.

Our Vision

Growing Kings, Inc. aims to become a nationally recognized organization that will rebuild and transform misguided young males into powerful men of abundance. We will be the change that we want to see in the world by providing young men with essential life tools that will allow them to become successful in their own endeavors, as well as be a leader for others and their communities.

Our Story

Since our inception in 2009, we have developed a theory of change based on heavily researched and effective mentoring techniques, as well as  our own program experiences.

  • We believe our work is very important to the young men we impact. We look to serve as a supplement to our schools, as a means to further enhance our students educational, emotional, and social experiences.
  • We believe in implementing culturally relevant, structured curricula based on the needs and maturity of our students.
  • We believe long-term engagements and consistent contact will produce longer lasting effects on our students.
  • We believe in developing partnerships with community leaders and organizations to ensure sustainable mentor pipelines.

Our partnerships with community businesses, organizations, and leaders is a key differentiating factor to our program delivery methods. Through these partnerships, students are provided a hands-on, first-person perspective into the professional lives and successes of our mentors. The varied backgrounds and experiences of our mentors provide them with an unmatched ability to communicate effectively and sincerely with the young male students, all while avoiding condescending pitfalls.

Coosa Riverkeeper is a citizen-based river conservation group with a mission to protect, restore and promote the Coosa River and its tributaries in Alabama.

Our financial disclosures which detail our diverse fundraising sources and how we spend that money to improve the Coosa River

http://cahabariverkeeper.org/mission/

The mission of the Cahaba Riverkeeper is to defend the ecological integrity of the Cahaba, its tributaries and watershed and to ensure clean water, a healthy aquatic environment, and the recreational and aesthetic values of the river. The Cahaba watershed is monitored to identify violations of clean water legislation. If notification to the violator and appropriate authorities fails to produce action, remedial and legal action is pursued to protect this unique natural resource and drinking water supply.

Junior Achievement (JA) of Alabama, a member of JA USA, is the largest and most comprehensive volunteer-delivered economics education program in the state of Alabama. JA of Alabama partners with corporations, organizations, schools and individuals to make a positive impact on the future of our students and our state.

Our volunteer-led programs teach K-12 students in schools throughout our state about business and entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and workforce readiness.  Volunteers share their personal and business experience to bring JA curriculum to life, helping students understand the real-world application of what they are learning in school. This added relevancy makes economic concepts relevant, fuels the entrepreneurial spirit, and prepares young people to succeed in a global economy.

JA of Alabama empowers more than 30,000 students annually to "own their economic success" by fostering work-readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy skills. Our experiential learning programs along with more than 2,000 business professionals, parents, retirees and college students inspire students to dream big and to reach their potential.
